Kid's Piano Songs
The best kids piano songs are those that use only the white keys. The reason for this is that kids find the black keys confusing at first. The white keys at least form a nice even stairway, with each white key uniformly 3/4 inch wide. Familiarity is another factor. Kids don't want to play songs they have never heard before. So the best kids piano songs are those that are familiar, and use only the white keys.
Many piano teachers make the mistake of using a standard beginning piano book, like Faber, Alfred or Bastien. The problem with these books is that they are filled with "fake" music designed to teach note reading, fingering and a host of other subjects best left for later. A better strategy is to delay reading music and get the child to play recognizable songs "by number."
What Songs Are Easy For Kids To Play?
There are numerous songs that use only the white keys and are very familiar to almost all kids. Here's a list with links to play a sample of each on our online piano.
What Is The Best Method To Start?
The best piano method is the one that engages the child with the piano and creates enthusiasm. We like to number the keys with removable stickers. Look at our online piano, which shows what your keyboard will look like with numbered stickers installed:
Kids Understand Numbers Instantly
While kids find musical notation incomprehensible, numbers are already a part of their lives. There are so many dimensions and planes in musical notation that kids are actually scared of it. Numbers, on the other hand, are entirely relevant to music study, and will be useful later when they start to read music.
Piano Is Easy
Enjoyment or Curriculum First?
Starting a child's course of piano study with frustration is a recipe for disaster. This is the reason that 90% of kids quit piano within the first year. A wiser choice is to allow the child to explore the piano for a time. They should be free of the limitations of reading music, and take the time to familiarize themselves with the piano keyboard.
The Songs Are The Same, The Method Is Different
Your child will play Jingle Bells in any beginning piano method. But they will enjoy their start much more if they are not struggling to figure out sheet music. There will be time to slowly introduce the elements of reading music after they have discovered that piano is fun. A fun start leads to continued interest.
