What is so important about these five horizontal lines? First, you must know there are five lines. Then, you must be able to distinguish visually the top and bottom line, as well as the middle line. (That’s three of the five lines, identified!) Don’t forget the other two lines. We need to be careful to notice that there are spaces in between the lines, and these all have their own names and functions. If you are a child, you are very confused by now.
That’s why we start with: “How many lines do you see?” Symbols will come later!
